Stussy

The Beginning: Surfboards & Sharpies (1980 – Laguna Beach, California)

Stüssy started in 1980, when Shawn Stussy, a California surfboard shaper, began signing his custom boards with a bold graffiti-style signature — that now-famous Stüssy logo.

To promote his surfboards, he printed the same signature on T-shirts and caps — and they sold out instantly from the back of his car.

Without even trying, he’d created a surf-meets-street movement.

The 80s Vibe: Surf, Skate & Street

Through the 1980s, Stüssy grew from a local surf brand into a global subculture.

Its aesthetic blended surf, punk, hip-hop, reggae, and skate culture — worlds that had never collided before.

Instead of polished ads, Stüssy thrived on authenticity.

People loved that it wasn’t trying too hard — it was just cool, creative, and connected to underground youth scenes.

The 90s Takeover: Streetwear is Born

By the early 90s, Stüssy had gone international — especially across New York, London, and Tokyo.

Shawn Stussy and James Jebbia (who would later found Supreme) built a network of creatives called the “International Stüssy Tribe.”

The Tribe included DJs, skaters, graffiti artists, and tastemakers from around the world — people who lived and breathed street culture.

Stüssy was no longer just a surf brand — it was the foundation of modern streetwear.
